At a Glance

The Higher Certificate in Creative Writing equips students with introductory knowledge and skills related to entering the self-publishing and creative writing industries. Students focus on writing original prose while gaining an overview of the entire process involved in conceptualising, crafting, editing, marketing, and publishing a book on digital platforms.

Supported by fundamental subjects in narrative theory, literature appreciation, and narrative drawing, as well as practical choice modules, graduates build a strong foundation to pursue self-publishing, creative industry opportunities, or further specialised writing studies.

Please note that this course’s core subjects are virtually mediated from Centurion, with accommodations made at Stellenbosch for relevant fundamental subjects.

Admission Requirements

The student accepted into this programme should have a recognised Matriculation Certificate obtained within South Africa or any equivalent qualification recognised by SAQA. 

To apply to enrol in the Higher Certificate in Creative Writing, prospective students must provide one of the following: 

  • A National Senior Certificate (or Senior Certificate if obtained before 2008) with at least a ‘Higher Certificate’ pass; OR 
  • A National Certificate (Vocational) NC(V) Higher Certificate pass; OR 
  • A Senior Certificate (SC) (without endorsement); OR 
  • A Senior Certificate (Amended) SC(A) Higher Certificate pass. 
  • For international qualifications: A SAQA Evaluation Certificate with NSC L4 equivalence.
